Veteran Vancouver police officer Terry Yung to run with BC NDP in Vancouver-Yaletown

Veteran Vancouver police officer and community leader Terry Yung will run with the BC NDP in Vancouver-Yaletown.

During his time with the Vancouver Police Department, Terry Yung held a wide range of assignments, including the beat in the Downtown Eastside, Financial Crime Detective, and Inspector heading up Diversity, Community and Indigenous Relations. His leadership saw him appointed to national and provincial advisory committees that tackled issues like hate crime. The longest-serving Board Chair of SUCCESS, he helped to grow the number of affordable housing units to over 1000.

“I believe that government should act to help people — to tackle the big challenges they’re facing, and to have their backs when they’re being bullied, attacked or exploited. Those values led me to policing, and those same values have led me to the BC NDP,” said Yung. “John Rustad isn’t interested in solving the problems facing Vancouver-Yaletown. He’ll rip up our Housing Action Plan, and he’ll cut our healthcare. People in this community can’t afford the risk.”

Since forming government in July 2017, the BC NDP has taken action on crucial issues that matter to the people of Vancouver-Yaletown, including:

  • Helping BC’s renters find — and keep — their homes by limiting rent increases, providing a renter’s rebate, and bringing tens of thousands of rental units back to market through the speculation tax and tough new restrictions on short-term rentals;
  • Connecting people to the care they need by hiring 700 more family doctors, licensing internationally-educated healthcare workers in BC and building a new medical school at SFU Surrey to train even more doctors;
  • Helping people with costs by eliminating MSP Premiums, reducing ICBC rates by $500 a year, boosting the BC Family Benefit by $445, cutting childcare fees in half, and making birth control free; and
  • Keeping communities safe by hiring 250 more police officers, giving police more power to address public drug use, cracking down on repeat violent offenders, and taking on organized crime — including seizing Hells Angels clubhouses and many other proceeds of crime.

“I know Terry is values driven. He readies action any time someone is pushed around, exploited, taken advantage of, or left behind. He knows we need to be tough on crime, and tough on the causes of crime. These values led him to an exceptional career in law enforcement, and have called him to public life as a BC NDP candidate,” said Premier David Eby. “He will join two other decorated senior police officers on our candidate team, all of whom have spent their careers dedicated to delivering safe and strong communities. The people of Vancouver-Yaletown can count on him to be in their corner.”

Terry Yung will join David Eby and 91 other exceptional BC NDP candidates in this fall’s provincial election, all committed to real action to help people build a good life here in BC.
