As the newly-nominated BC NDP candidate for Saanich South, Lana Popham renewed her commitment to look out for everyday people and defend against powerful interests.

The MLA for Saanich South since 2009, Lana Popham is a former Minister of Agriculture and the current Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. A long-term resident of Saanich, she knows how important housing, access to healthcare and affordability are for people to have a good quality of life.

“Between a global pandemic and global inflation, we’ve been through a lot in Saanich South, and across the province,” said Popham. “That’s why I’m so proud to be a part of David Eby’s BC NDP team dedicated to taking action to make this easier, whether it’s hiring family doctors, or building the homes that we so desperately need.”

Since forming government in July 2017, the BC NDP has taken action on crucial issues that matter to the people of Saanich South, including:

• Putting people ahead of speculators and investors by bringing in tough new restrictions on short-term rentals and a speculation tax, plus simplified approvals that make it easier and faster to get 300,000 new homes built;
• Connecting people to the care they need by hiring 700 more family doctors, licensing internationally-educated healthcare workers in BC and building a new medical school at SFU Surrey to train even more doctors;
• Putting money back in your pocket by eliminating MSP premiums, lowering ICBC rates by $500 a year and boosting the BC Family Benefit by $445; and
• Working with the Green Party to develop CleanBC, the most ambitious climate plan in North America, and taking action to electrify the economy, create green jobs, and more opportunities for BC businesses.
