Rustad’s plan hides his agenda for cuts, costs, and cancellations
After insisting over and over that he would not make any cuts, today John Rustad announced an economic plan that includes a process to make deep cuts to services British Columbians rely on. But Rustad isn’t saying what spending he’ll “eliminate” until after the election.
John Rustad’s plan just doesn’t add up. He can’t do everything he’s promising, and he won’t tell British Columbians what his real plans are.
But we know his priorities based on his record as a B.C. Liberal cabinet minister:
- Fired thousands of healthcare workers and forced health authorities into shortfalls, resulting in reductions to MRIs and surgeries;
- Froze the school capital budget their last eight years and failed to build a single new school in Surrey in their last four years in power;
- Promised and then failed to deliver both a small business tax cut and Skytrain extensions on Broadway and in Surrey;
- Promised to get everyone a family doctor and made the problem far worse instead;
- Gave tax breaks to the top 2% of income earners and paid for it by doubling MSP and hiking ICBC rates.
Ravi Parmar, BC NDP Candidate for Langford-Highlands:
“John Rustad isn’t telling British Columbians what he’s planning because he knows it will cost people, just like he did before. The last time Rustad and the B.C. Liberals were in power, they cut taxes for the top 2% and paid for it with deep cuts to schools and hospitals. Now he’s hiding his real plan because it will mean cuts to healthcare, higher car insurance rates, and cancellations to projects like hospitals, schools and transportation projects. That’s a risk we can’t afford.”
