Labour leader and former Mayor of White Rock Darryl Walker wins BC NDP nomination in Surrey-White Rock

Labour leader and former White Rock mayor Darryl Walker has won the BC NDP nomination in Surrey-White Rock.

Darryl Walker is no stranger to public service and putting people first. As the past-President of the BC General Employees Union, he fought for fair wages and working conditions for people every day. As the Mayor of White Rock, he led his community through the pandemic, worked with organizations addressing addiction and mental health issues, and fought for affordable housing and improving services for his constituents. Having lived in White Rock for decades, he is dedicated to taking action for the people of his community, fighting for affordable housing, for a stronger public healthcare system, and for more money in your pocket.

“People in Surrey-White Rock need a government that will take on the speculators profiting from our housing crisis, and let our kids and grandkids build lives here in BC,” said Walker. “John Rustad has said he’d rip up BC’s housing plan. It’s unbelievable. A Rustad government would send housing prices skyrocketing. It’s a risk we can’t afford.”

Since forming government in July 2017, the BC NDP has taken action on crucial issues that matter to the people of Surrey-White Rock, including:

  • Putting people ahead of speculators and investors by bringing in tough new restrictions on short-term rentals and a speculation tax, plus simplified approvals that make it easier and faster to get 300,000 new homes built;
  • Connecting people to the care they need by hiring 700 more family doctors, licensing internationally-educated healthcare workers in BC and building a new medical school at SFU Surrey to train even more doctors;
  • Putting money back in your pocket by eliminating MSP premiums, lowering ICBC rates by $500 a year and boosting the BC Family Benefit by $445; and
  • Keeping communities safe by hiring 250 more police officers, giving police more power to address public drug use, cracking down on repeat violent offenders, and taking on organized crime — including seizing Hells Angels clubhouses and many other proceeds of crime.

“Darryl Walker has a long record of using elected office to deliver real results for people,” said Premier David Eby. “The people of Surrey-White Rock can count on him to work just as hard for them, so they can build good lives in the community they call home.”

Darryl Walker will join David Eby and 91 other exceptional BC NDP candidates in this fall’s provincial election, all committed to real action to help people build a good life here in BC.
