Harwinder Sandhu to continue to take action for people as BC NDP candidate in Vernon-Lumby

Harwinder Sandhu, the present MLA for Vernon-Monashee, will run again with the BC NDP in Vernon-Lumby.

Harwinder Sandhu was first elected as an MLA in 2020. Born to a farm family, and having lived in rural communities across BC, she understands the needs of those communities. As a healthcare worker for over two decades, and as a mother of three, she knows deeply what it means to have a government that is committed to investing in, and strengthening, public healthcare, housing, public and post secondary education, affordable childcare, and the other vital services BC families rely on, as well as taking action to address climate change.

“As a healthcare worker, I saw the effects of the cuts made by Falcon and Rustad firsthand. We can’t go back. Patients can’t afford the risk of cuts or closures,” said Sandhu. “Our BC NDP team has taken action to make things better, from hiring new family doctors and healthcare workers to building new hospitals, investing in long term care, as well as providing resources to seniors in their homes and communities. We know things are hard. And that’s why we’re in your corner, taking action with several affordability measures so you and your family can live a good life.”

Since forming government in July 2017, the BC NDP has taken action on crucial issues that matter to the people of Vernon-Lumby, including:

  • Putting people ahead of speculators and investors by bringing in tough new restrictions on short-term rentals and a speculation tax, plus simplified approvals that make it easier and faster to get 300,000 new homes built;
  • Connecting people to the care they need by hiring 700 more family doctors, licensing internationally-educated healthcare workers in BC and building a new medical school at SFU Surrey to train even more doctors;
  • Helping people with costs by eliminating MSP Premiums, reducing ICBC rates by $500 a year, boosting the BC Family Benefit by $445, cutting childcare fees in half, and making birth control free; and
  • Keeping communities safe by hiring 250 more police officers, giving police more power to address public drug use, cracking down on repeat violent offenders, and taking on organized crime — including seizing Hells Angels clubhouses and many other proceeds of crime.

“As an experienced nurse, Harwinder is a champion for high quality healthcare that supports everyone and for the healthcare workers who care for us,” said Premier David Eby. “People in Vernon-Lumby and across this province need a government that will expand healthcare and ensure every community gets the care they deserve. Harwinder will fight for that.”

Harwinder Sandhu will join David Eby and 91 other exceptional BC NDP candidates in this fall’s provincial election, all committed to real action to help people build a good life here in BC.
