Fruitvale Mayor Steve Morissette nominated in Kootenay-Monashee with BC NDP
Steve Morissette, now officially the BC NDP candidate for Kootenay-Monashee, is dedicated to solutions that work for people.
Steve Morissette is the Mayor of Fruitvale, where he and his wife have raised four boys. First elected ten years ago, he has a record of action on housing and childcare, having led the building of a 37 seat daycare and a 31 unit fully accessible affordable housing complex. Under his leadership, Fruitvale committed to paying people good wages, and put a plan in place to move to 100% renewable energy by 2050. He is ready to take his drive and record of action to the Legislature as MLA for Kootenay-Monashee.
“People in my community need action on the issues that affect us the most: housing, healthcare and the cost of living. The BC NDP has a record of bold action on these issues,” said Morissette. “Falcon and Rustad have a record of cuts that will cost people more. We can’t afford the risk.”
Since forming government in July 2017, the BC NDP has taken action on crucial issues that matter to the people of Kootenay-Monashee, including:
- Putting people ahead of speculators and investors by bringing in tough new restrictions on short-term rentals and a speculation tax, plus simplified approvals that make it easier and faster to get 300,000 new homes built;
- Connecting people to the care they need by hiring 700 more family doctors, licensing internationally-educated healthcare workers in BC and building a new medical school at SFU Surrey to train even more doctors;
- Putting money back in your pocket by eliminating MSP premiums, lowering ICBC rates by $500 a year and boosting the BC Family Benefit by $445; and
- Keeping communities safe by hiring 250 more police officers, giving police more power to address public drug use, cracking down on repeat violent offenders, and taking on organized crime — including seizing Hells Angels clubhouses and many other proceeds of crime.
"As Mayor of Fruitvale, Steve took action on housing, on childcare, and delivered good-paying jobs, helping build a strong foundation for families in his home community,” said Premier David Eby. "The people of Kootenay-Monashee need housing they can afford, lower costs, and healthcare they can count on. With Steve in their corner, that's exactly what they'll get."
Steve Morissette will join David Eby and 91 other exceptional BC NDP candidates in this fall’s provincial election, all committed to real action to help people build a good life here in BC.
