Community champion Jagrup Brar to run again with BC NDP in Surrey-Fleetwood

Community champion Jagrup Brar will run again with the BC NDP in Surrey-Fleetwood, re-affirming a commitment to tackle the community’s tough challenges.

Elected five times as an MLA, Jagrup Brar has represented people in Surrey for decades. As the past Executive Director of the Surrey Self Employment and Entrepreneur Development Society (SEEDS), Jagrup trained new entrepreneurs to develop and launch successful small businesses — strengthening the community in which he, his wife and his two children live.

“In Surrey, we know that we need a government that is in our corner: one that understands our challenges and acts to make our lives easier. We know that what we'll get from Falcon and Rustad is the same deep cuts as they made when they were in government. We can't afford the risk,” said Brar. “David Eby's BC NDP knows that our growing city needs investment. And we've invested, from building a new hospital to extending the SkyTrain to hiring new family doctors to putting money back in your pocket. We know that the future can sometimes feel uncertain. But know that our government is in your corner, taking action so that you can build a good life here in Surrey.”

Since forming government in July 2017, the BC NDP has taken action on crucial issues that matter to the people of Surrey-Fleetwood, including:

  • Helping people get care when they need it by building and upgrading hospitals across BC, including a new hospital and cancer care centre in Surrey;
  • Putting people ahead of speculators and investors by bringing in tough new restrictions on short-term rentals and a speculation tax, plus simplified approvals that make it easier and faster to get 300,000 new homes built;
  • Putting money back in your pocket by eliminating MSP premiums, lowering ICBC rates by $500 a year and boosting the BC Family Benefit by $445; and
  • Getting you around faster with record investments in transportation projects, including expanding SkyTrain, adding lanes to Highway 1, and replacing the Pattullo Bridge and Massey Tunnel.

"I have served with Jagrup in caucus, and in cabinet, for years. In that time, I have known him to advocate powerfully for his community in Surrey-Fleetwood," said Premier David Eby. "In him, the people of Surrey have a real champion for their city.”

Jagrup Brar will join David Eby and 91 other exceptional BC NDP candidates in this fall’s provincial election, all committed to real action to help people build a good life here in BC.
