BC NDP nominates MLA and community advocate Henry Yao in Richmond Centre to stand up for you

With a vision for more progress in Richmond Centre, Henry Yao has been nominated as the BC NDP candidate, promising to take on the tough challenges to make life better for people.

Yao was elected MLA for Richmond South Centre in 2020. A dedicated community volunteer with more than 10 years of experience working with young people, Henry has been active with the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the Richmond Chinese Community Society. He co-founded Dialogue Richmond Society, an organization dedicated to promoting safe, respectful, and constructive dialogues on difficult community topics.

“Richmond is an amazing place to live and raise a family and there’s much more we can do to help people thrive here,” said Yao. “Our BC NDP team is taking action to ease everyday costs with car insurance savings, BC Hydro rebates, and child care savings, improve health care, take on housing speculators and build homes people can afford. John Rustad’s Conservative Party would increase fees, let speculators drive up the cost of homes and cut hospitals and education again. We can’t risk that.”

Since forming government in July 2017, the BC NDP has taken action on crucial issues that matter to the people of Richmond Centre, including:

  • Strengthening healthcare by building and expanding hospitals in Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby and Surrey;
  • Hiring new doctors and nurses, plus licensing internationally-trained health professionals to work in BC;
  • Tackling housing costs by taking on speculators, updating zoning rules to allow for more townhouses, duplexes and triplexes, and making it easier for cities to build more homes near transit; and
  • Connecting communities across the province with new infrastructure, including the Surrey-Langley Skytrain, Patullo bridge replacement and Massey crossing — while keeping tolls off bridges.

“I am constantly amazed by Henry’s boundless energy, enduring commitment and hard work on behalf of people living in Richmond Centre,” said Premier David Eby. “He will fight for keeping costs down, better health care and more homes people can afford.”

Henry Yao will join David Eby and 91 other exceptional BC NDP candidates in this fall’s provincial election, all committed to real action to help people build a good life here in BC.
