Taking Action for People: Highlights from the BC NDP's 2023 Convention
A little while ago, our party wrapped up its 47th convention — our first in-person since 2019 — and our first with Premier David Eby as our leader.
It’s fair to say we’re still riding high from connecting with so many New Democrats from across British Columbia, and we’re more committed than ever to building a future worth fighting for.
"I'm nowhere near satisfied"
Our leader, David Eby, put it best: “I’m proud of the progress we’ve made together as BC New Democrats, but I’m nowhere near satisfied.”
He wasn’t alone. New Democrats know that the people of BC are facing big challenges with housing, healthcare and rising costs from global inflation. It’s why we’re working hard every day to make a difference for people, and to make BC a place where everyone has the opportunity to build a good life.
Resolutions & taking action for people
A lot of action happens at Convention, but policy debates always draw a crowd. This time our delegates — more than 700 of them! – passed resolutions including:
- Expanding the Speculation and Vacancy Tax and tackling the housing crisis head-on.
- Condemning Transphobic and Homophobic Hate and standing up for equality and diversity.
- Increasing Food Production and addressing rising grocery prices to ensure food security.
- Establishing a Youth Climate Corps and accelerating climate action for a sustainable future.
- Expanding Rural Healthcare Services and enhancing healthcare accessibility in rural areas.
Big support for two important leaders
The Convention was also a significant moment for our leader, David Eby, who received overwhelming endorsement with 93.1% support, signaling strong unity and confidence in his leadership as we approach the next provincial election.
We also re-elected our President, Aaron Sumexheltza, the first First Nations president of our party, and welcomed guest speakers including Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada's NDP, and April Sims, President of the Washington State Labour Council, among others.
Looking ahead to Fall 2024
Convention 2023 may be our first time together in-person in a long while, but it’s certainly not the last. As we look towards next October’s provincial election, there’s lots more to come. Let’s keep this momentum going!
Let's continue building a future worth fighting for, together.
