Elbows up! How we're standing up for BC and Canada against Trump's tariffs
For almost as long as we've both existed, Canada and the United States have been good friends and neighbours.
We share a border, we trade goods and services, and many Canadians and British Columbians have friends and family in nearby US states. But now, US President Donald Trump is threatening that relationship with unfair and unnecessary tariffs that hurt workers, businesses, and families on both sides of the border.
This isn’t just another trade dispute. It’s unprecedented, painful, completely avoidable, and tariffs are only a part of it. Trump says that he wants Canada to become America's '51st state' — something no one except him seems to want. It's for all these reasons, and more, that we’re taking action to stand up for British Columbia and Canada.
How is BC Pushing Back on Trump’s Unfair Tariffs?
Our BC NDP government isn't sitting back and letting these unfair tariffs go unanswered. Here are some of the steps we’re taking:
- Removing all US liquor from provincial-owned liquor store shelves.
- Recommending BC government and Crown corporations work with local BC and Canadian vendors instead of US ones.
- Exploring imposing fees and levies on commercial vehicles traveling between BC and Alaska.
- Tabling the new Tariff Stablization Act to give BC more tools to rapidly and effectively respond to Trump's tariffs.
- Ending BC Hydro rebates for Tesla products purchased after Mar 12, 2025.
Beyond fighting back against unfair tariffs, our BC NDP government is also ramping up support for local businesses. That means:
- Expanding funding and grants for BC-based businesses to grow and compete.
- Strengthening Buy BC and Buy Canadian programs so more people can support local.
- Working with small businesses to ensure they have the support and infrastructure they need to succeed.
- Investing in manufacturing, tech, and agriculture right here at home.
We know that when we support BC businesses, we strengthen our economy and create more good-paying jobs for British Columbians.
Government action isn't the only way we can stand strong against Trump's tariffs and threats. Everyone has a role to play in standing up for BC and Canada.
Here are a few things you can do right now to show you're on Team BC and Team Canada:
- When and if you can, choose products and services provided by BC and Canadian companies. Our pals in government have a growing list of BC companies you can support, and if you're super keen, you can join more then 5,500 British Columbians who've taken our Buy BC and Buy Canadian pledge.
- Travel in BC and Canada this summer. Instead of heading south, explore the beauty of our province and our country.
- Be kind to Americans — but push back against hate. The vast majority of Americans don’t support Trump’s actions. We can stand up against unfair policies without spreading division and hate, which only helps people who want to keep us divided.
BC is strong — and so is Canada — and we’re not backing down.
By standing together, supporting local businesses, and pushing back against unfair trade practices, we can protect our economy and ensure we stay as we're meant to be: the true north, strong and free.
